Essential PCB Components Guide for Beginners

And perhaps the most basic of passive components: The humble resistor. Their main purpose is to restrict or limit the current flow within a circuit. Available in forms such as through-hole and surface-mount, resistors resist, measured in ohms (Ω). Current is limited according to the resistor value. The choice of resistor value is particularly important, since an incorrect value will lead to malfunctions in the entire circuit or damage to other components. Even though most manufacturers print the value directly on the component, the color coding used for resistors and their values needs to be understood, especially for beginners.
Resistors are used in applications such as voltage dividers, current limiters and pull-up/pull-down circuits. Selecting the appropriate power rating is also important so that it does not overheat; if a resistor heats up more than its rated wattage, it will burn out.
Capacitors: Storing Energy

The polarities (+ and —) that must be applied for each of them exist in electrolytic capacitors as a consequence of their polarized nature. Ceramic capacitors are non-polarized in nature and are used over high frequencies. Inductors: Resisting Change
An inductor, which is just a coil, is a passive circuit element that stores energy in the form of a magnetic field. Inductors are commonly deployed in the fields of power supplies, filters, and resonant circuits.
